Since we are in the midst of three consecutive days of rain here in Annapolis Maryland and that it is certainly Autumn I was struck how both of these influences permeated the moment that I had while standing on the St. John’s College campus here today looking up at this hill full of leaves. That moment consisted of the vibrations put off by the presence of a building perched at the top of a hill with a blanket of fallen leaves beneath it on a college campus that is dedicated to immersing it’s students in the writings of some of the greatest thinkers of their day. Even on this rainy Autumn morning the karma of the classics was certainly present.

This is Humphreys Hall named for Hector Humphreys a past president of St. John’s College. Humphreys Hall, originally named the Boarding House, was the first building that was actually constructed by St. John’s College. Built between 1835 and 1837 Humphreys Hall originally served as a dormitory, then a barracks as well as a hospital and morgue for Union soldiers during the Civil War. Later Humphreys Hall was used as college administrative offices, science laboratories and today it is a dormitory once again.

So when you find yourself walking along College Avenue here in Annapolis and are passing by St. John’s College just look straight up the center brick walkway by Prince George Street and then turn your head to the left to see Humphreys Hall sitting majestically on top of the hill.

Enjoy your rainy Autumn day,

Glenn
