What did you on Sunday? I am willing to bet that it might not have been as much fun as what these folks did. It was Sunday April 1st, Springtime had arrived here in Annapolis Maryland and the temperatures were in the low 60′s while the winds were let’s just say very favorable. I found myself here on the Severn River watching the assortment of vessels making their way back and forth from the Chesapeake Bay. There were a couple of powerboats skimming their way over the chop and then there were about four dozen sailboats out under sail as well.

It was soon after I arrived that I noticed this one particular sailboat coming in from the Bay yet it did not seem that it was heading into port quite yet.

Yes it seems that the crew had decided to make another run out on the Chesapeake Bay as it raised it’s last sail and the members of the crew found their places on board.

Now how’s this for a way to spend your Sunday afternoon? Here we can see some of the crew on the starboard side engaged in a bit of conversation as one crew member makes the final adjustments to a sail.

With the final adjustments made to it’s rigging the Mary Lou picks up speed here in the lower part of the Severn River and the crew seems to be keeping her heeled just right as she heads into the wind.

One of the Great Things About Sailing Are Those Fantastic Views

What a view I said to myself as I took this picture Sunday. Here we can see the Mary Lou and her crew making their way past the antenna’s at Greenbury Point with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge serving as a backdrop to this great scene on the Severn River.

There is a bit of a chop on the water and the starboard crew members have their eyes open as they look out from the mouth of the Severn River to the traffic up ahead on the Chesapeake Bay.

Now all that is left is for the crew to enjoy themselves and keep the Mary Lou headed into those favorable winds out there on the Chesapeake Bay here on this first Sunday in April.

Well I have to tell you that it was quite exhilarating to be able to witness this Sunday sail by the crew of the Mary Lou today and next weekend when others are out working in their yards or heading to the supermarket or the mall just remember what some people might be doing here in Annapolis, that is if the winds are just right.

Happy Sailing Season everyone,

Glenn
