3rd Annual Classic Wooden Boat Rendezvous & Race In Annapolis Maryland – September 22nd and 23rd 2012

Annapolis Experience Blog Featured Article & Photos

Annapolis Maryland was host this past weekend to the 3rd Annual Classic Wooden Boat Rendezvous & Race that took place at the National Sailing Hall of Fame, who it should be noted, were instrumental in staging what has now become a regular sailing event here along the Annapolis waterfront. This wooden boat rendezvous, previously known as a regatta, is attended by boats representing reproductions of turn of the century racing yachts to the historically restored yacht Elf – first built in 1888, and also this year by our local favorite Sandbagger’s Racers Bull & Bear.

Of course on Saturday and Sunday the weather was perfect for both visitors and sailing enthusiasts to come downtown to see these classic sailing vessels up close as well as to watch them Sunday morning when they set sail on the Severn River for a friendly race on the Chesapeake Bay.

This blog post photo show contains some of the pictures that I took on both days of the event featuring some of these Classic Wooden Boats in attendance this year as well as one picture of a sailor enjoying the early morning air in Annapolis.

As always just click on any of these pictures to view a full size version of it.

Tall wooden masts could be seen rising up and down in the water along the docks Saturday afternoon at the National Sailing Hall of Fame that really emphasized the point that these were wooden racers built to take advantage of every square foot of canvas that the wind would provide them as they would make their way through the waters on the bay.

One of the things that I wanted to do in covering this years regatta was to take a picture, or perhaps more, of some of these attending classic wooden boats in the early morning hours, weather conditions permitting which it did not do last year, that captured an image of their lines outside the normal hours of the event. As it turned out I was able to get to the waterfront way before sunrise on Sunday and had the opportunity to take this picture of the sailing yacht Spellbound, out of Oxford Maryland, just as dawn arrived over the harbor in Annapolis.
