A Foggy Christmas Day on State Circle and College Avenue in Annapolis Maryland • Friday December 25th 2015

Holiday Decorations & Fog

Oh boy has it been a foggy Christmas Day in Annapolis Maryland. While I never heard the sounds of Santa’s reindeer this morning the fog horn at the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, along with those on the cargo carriers anchored in the Annapolis shipping channel, echoed across the Bay and City shorelines throughout the day.

Anyway after delivering gifts to family and friends I spent part of the day taking photographs of the Christmas ambiance visible along State Circle and College Avenue, to begin with at least. Later my travels took me south of Duke of Gloucester Street for more pictures that I will not be posting until tomorrow – sorry I’ve had a pretty full day and week as well. The following pictures were taken late in the morning and into the afternoon with the fog pretty much visible in each one. Enjoy!

Perhaps one of the few times of the year when one can find the front of the Governor Calvert House devoid of any cars, which happens to be on Christmas Day. Historical research indicates that a single story house with a basement was built on this site in the 1720’s. Now today after a series of four renovations over almost three hundred years one can find this present Italianate and Gothic influenced inn on State Circle decorated quite nicely for the Christmas Holidays.

As is most evident today the warm temperatures of the last couple of weeks have taken their toll on both the wreath and garland hanging on the main gate and along the iron fence at the Government House, the official residence of Maryland’s Governor. All in all though it certainly conveys a classic Christmas ambiance in its own right that’s for sure.

This is one of the oldest public buildings in Annapolis Maryland – the Old Treasury Building that was constructed in the 1730’s. In this picture one can see two relatively small holiday wreaths hanging on the outside of the east windows with today’s fog visible both above and to the sides of the building.

Another Historic Inns of Annapolis located on State Circle is the Robert Johnson House that was built in the 1780’s, although only part of an exterior wall is all that remains of the original building. The above picture is of the entrance door to this Federal style inn featuring a single holiday wreath with its frame bordered by garland. This is the only one of today’s pictures in which the fog is not evident.

The final picture in this series is of the Commodore Waddell House on College Avenue that is located directly across from the campus of St. John’s College. Built in 1881 and representative of British Queen Anne style architecture one can see the holiday garland framing the double entrance doors on the porch. In addition small red ribbons can be seen tied on the small stone lions set on the corners of the short brick walls along the sidewalk. Of course today’s foggy conditions are readily apparent on the left side of the picture.

I hope that you have enjoyed today’s virtual walk in the fog on State Circle and College Avenue to check out City Christmas decorations. Have a nice evening everyone,

Glenn
