Gable Ends and a Faux Wall Dormer

Queen Anne Style with Shingle Accents on the Corner in Murray Hill Annapolis Maryland July 10th 2016

Today’s walk takes us to the eastern most end of the Murray Hill neighborhood here in Annapolis Maryland to checkout an interesting and slightly unique looking corner house. Built in 1903 or so its architectural nomenclature has been designated as that of Queen Anne, although it also features noticeable Shingle style accents.

In the case of its Queen Anne designation there have been researchers and librarians suggesting that Colonial Revival features are also present on the exterior of the house as well, although I can only attribute that inference to the four tapered columns supporting the porch roof.

Certainly one of the more noticeable architectural design elements on the house’s exterior is its full front gable end covered in weathered wood shingles or shakes, which provides substance for the afore mentioned Shingle style notation. On the north side of the house one can see a small cross gable that is also covered in weathered wood shingles.

What I also find interesting about this house’s facade is the centered, and slightly protruding, three section panel bay like window above the porch, more of wall if you would. Note how the fascia millwork above this faux bay follows the window’s polygonal profile, as does its oriel like bottom into the porch roof.

As an aside, and certainly not to challenge this house’s formal architectural designation, from the perspective in which today’s featured photograph was taken a Dutch Colonial style is somewhat evident on the second floor facade including the shape of its roofline.

Thank you for tagging along today and enjoy the rest of your day,

Glenn
