Early Morning on Market Space

As I walked along Market Space early in the morning my intention was to stop briefly, so as to pickup a cup of coffee at City Dock Coffee, and afterwards proceed up to the Maryland State House so as to take a couple of photographs depicting the onset of sunrise over the waterfront from an elevated location.

Just as I reached the coffeehouse door I paused and began to think of the illuminated storefront back at the Blanca Flor Silver Jewelry shop that I had just passed by. For you see the illuminated first floor window displays there and the green shop sign, also serving to influence a section of the second story brick wall above it, made quite a visual impression on me, even in the absence of that first cup of coffee of the day.

So reversing my path I headed back along Market Space where I stopped to take in both the lights and colors emanating from the shop’s storefront. After dodging a multitude of workers, bringing both equipment and supplies from their trucks parked nearby into the Chipotle’s being renovated next door, I snapped off about half a dozen photographs of sections of the building’s facade.

As an aside this same building is located where the 18th century Factor’s Row previously stood, no not the former restaurant that recently operated nearby rather the import and merchant concern that occupied this same block 250 years ago. Unfortunately an 1883 fire destroyed most of the afore mentioned 1770s building complex.

It was later, in 1885 or so, that Annapolis businessman Joseph S M Basil had two three story buildings constructed at this same location serving for combined commercial, retail and residential uses. There are Annapolitans that might remember how years ago both Gottlieb’s and Wilken’s clothing stores were located in this same building, and later Britches of Georgetown as well, actually it might have been their Great Outdoors one.

Anyway even though I did not have an opportunity to upload the photographs I had taken early in the morning until this afternoon, having now viewed them certainly makes me glad that I postponed getting that first morning cup of coffee.

Have a great week,

Glenn
