As I stood across the street from the Day Building earlier in the morning I found myself thinking once again about its joint 19th century architectural heritage as well as its present day Italianate unifying design style.

For you see this prominent looking office building, located at Church Circle and Northwest Street, is actually made up of two separate structures, with the first one consisting of a three story and one room deep frame dwelling, read a boarding house, that was built for a Mr. Roland Conner in the early 1880s. As it were a building already existed on Northwest Street, seen today in the section on the right side with the dual awnings just beyond the crosswalk lines, that had been built for a Dr. William Revell in the mid 1800s. By 1911 the two separate buildings were unified architecturally by a Mr. William M. Holladay were it would serve as the location for the Anne Arundel Advertiser and other Capital-Gazette publications in the future.

Eventually the combined structures became known locally as the Speer Building while in the mid 20th century the building underwent an extensive renovation, one of the results being the outside commercial Italianate details that adorn it today. As an aside the building’s exterior stucco finish was fairly recently painted, in 2015 or so, to its present color while prior to that it was of a beige hue.

All in all this present day office building contributes nicely to a very picturesque commercial streetscape here in downtown Annapolis Maryland.

Have a good day,

Glenn
