Walking about on yet another cloudy day in Annapolis found me returning to St. Anne’s Church for a bit of history as well as spiritual inspiration. Both of which were quite evident not only as I basked in its exterior presence but also within its hallowed walls.

Standing inside the vestibule I viewed the illustrations depicting the designs of the three churches that have all stood at the center of Church Circle for over 310 years. Actually one aspect of the afore mentioned illustrations that I found quite noteworthy was how well historically they represent the three churches actual orientation to the surrounding locale.

For you see the illustration on the left depicts the entrance to the 1704 to 1775 church facing in the direction of the Maryland State House, perhaps as Governor Francis Nicholson had envisioned when he was laying out the then new Colonial Capital during the late 1690s. Next as one can see in the right most illustration the 1792 to 1858 church faced in a westward direction, while also having an upper gallery so as to accommodate an increasing number of church parishioners. Finally the third illustration, in the center, depicts the 1859 and present day church with its distinct Romanesque Revival architecture.

As an aside one should consider taking time to visit St. Anne’s Church for it truly is one of the historical architectural treasures of Maryland’s Capital City on the Chesapeake Bay.

Have a good day,

Glenn
