White Brick Wall Serves as a Seemingly Blank Canvas

To the casual passerby I’m sure the fieldstone foundation seen along the northwest side of the circa 1720 Edward Dorsey House here would be the more dominant aspect of today’s featured photograph while others might take note of both the shrubbery and brickwork leading towards the backyard garden.

As for myself I was drawn to this shaded Historic District side yard by the seemingly dominate white brick wall above the garden level door and window. It had the semblance of a blank canvas in need of decorative or natural touch such as in the case of the latter perhaps vines growing upwards to the roof.

As an aside the Edward Dorsey House is thought to be one of the oldest brick houses in Annapolis with a historian here and there suggesting it to have been built in the 1680s before the Maryland’s Capital was moved from St. Mary’s City in the 1690s. Also from this perspective its Georgian architectural style is for the most part obvious although its upper facade does show its 19th century Greek Revival influenced alternations.

All in all this shaded side courtyard looks to be a nice place to relax on a summer afternoon.

Have a good afternoon,

Glenn
